User's Guide
Using Hydropolis

User rights

Hydropolis has an extentise User-rights system. There are four user levels. The higher level the visitor is, the more actions he can do.

Guest

Guest is a Hydropolis user with the lowest rights. Guests cannot enter any data neither change any information stored by the system except their personal information. Guests can:
  • View USWM knowledge base structured in Components.
  • Use project templates to build his/her own projects.

User

'User' is the most common user level. He/she is target audience of Hydropolis and should be helped by Hydropolis in his USWM projects. User can use Hydropolis in the same way as Guest PLUS:
  • Enter new data.
  • Modify the data he has previously entered.

Manager

Manager is a person who helps Users.
Manager can use Hydropolis in the same way as User PLUS:
  • Assign suitable project templates to users.
  • Compare users projects

Administrator

Administrator is the most powerful person in the system.
Administrator can use Hydropolis in the same way as Manager PLUS:
  • Create new user accounts.
  • Build new project templates including visibility rules and proposals.

Component Editor

This is a special role (not really a user level) of some Users.
Each component (CS, PI, SH) has a User who serves as the component moderator. This person can modify the data entered by other users in the component he is responsible for. Like this, irrelevant data could be removed and components kept in a shape most useful for its Users.

Examples of Usage - Use Cases

Hydropolis is a complex system which could be used in many different ways. It is therefore useful to give a couple of examples of how different users can use the system.

First visit of a new user

On your first visit to Hydropolis we suggest you to take the the following steps:
  1. First of all you have to log into the system. Your administrator has to set up your user account for you and give you your username and password. If you havent got your user account yet, ask your nearest DayWater scientific partner.
  2. Visit your personal settings page. Click Setting in the Left Menu. There you can change your password and edit your personal information when necessary.
  3. To get an overview of Hydropolis content, visit the Site Map page. In First page tile mozaik click the Site map tile. It is the third tile from the left in the lowest row.
  4. While at Site map page, you might have chosen a component of your interest. If not, we suggest you to visit Libraries. In First page it is the fourth tile in the second row.
  5. Log out and come again. Next time, see also News tile to check for updates and improvements.

Stakeholder non USWM expert

You have already visited Hydropolis and know which componets it consits of. You are involved in a USWM project and want to find out some examples of suitable approaches to similar situations.
  1. Visit Case Studies database to see examples of projects. To find those similar to your situation, use Key Terms filtering.
  2. Visit Best Management Pracitices Catalogue to learn about possible techniques.
  3. If you are interested in Pollution, visit Pollutants and Risk&Vulnerability sections.
  4. If you are interested in broad context of various aspects of a water, visit Urban Dynamics section.

Stakeholder USWM expert

You know have already participated in several USWM projects. You also visited breifly visited Case Studies and BMP Catologue in Hydropolis.
  1. Read in more detail information about projects similar to your in CS and BMP.
  2. Visit Stakeholders database and Policy instruments infromation database.
  3. Visit MCC and try it out. Read about indicators that come in breach of BMPs you meant to use.
  4. If you need more specialized information, try Guided Tour.
  5. Visit Tools section. Some tools you find there might be useful.

USWM expert after a finished project

You have just finished a project and you want to share you experience. The project might be a suceesful one or a failure. In both cases other Hydropolis users might learn a lot from it.
  1. Consider, if your project should be a Case Study or an Example of a water aspect. If not sure, visit Aspects of Water and Case studies database to see what is already there.
  2. Login to Hydropolis and click the enter data link in the left menu.
  3. Choose the relevant section.
  4. Create a new item and enter its characteristic data.
  5. Attach documents and/or image files if possible. In CS do not forget to enter the enduser's data if relevant.
  6. You may enter relevant data in Policy instruments too - important regulations concerning your project.

USWM project manager

You are the manager of a USWM project where several stakeholders are involved. It is difficult to reach an agreement of the stakeholders. You need to compare their approaches to be able to suggest the most acceptable solution to all.
  1. Ask your stakeholders to use Hydropolis.
  2. After they've got familiar with the system and learned about some examples from CS and BMP libraries draw their attention to Guided Tour.
  3. Ask your stakeholders to build the project in Guided Tour.
  4. Compare the matrixes resulting from different stakeholder's projects.

USWM expert

You know a lot about USWM projects. You want to share your knowledge with other users. You already build several projects in Guided Tour. You think that a new project template might be useful in certain cases.
  1. Build a new tree of questions and answers.
  2. Set visibility rules for the tree.
  3. Define proposals for the tree.
  4. Tell other Hydropolis users of your tree.
There are naturally many more other levels of usage and situations of decission support in Hydropolis. The above examples were chosen to give you a brief idea of the possibilities. When you start working with Hydropolis you will soon discover many other aspects of the system.
